Omaha’s only 24-hour emergency animal hospital is reducing its hours
The only 24-hour emergency animal hospital in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area has cut its operations due to a shortage of veterinarians. The VCA MidWest Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center has lost five of nine doctors since the pandemic, says hospital manager Laura Bates. “How we balance that . . . not burn out our staff but be available for our community?” asks Bates. “We’re seeing that it’s hitting home now, and we have to figure out how we’re going to bridge that gap.” Emergency walk-in hours for the VCA will go from all day to mainly overnight: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays and weekends from noon to 7 a.m.
